Kearneysville woman indicted on child neglect charge

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - A Kearneysville, W.Va., woman has been indicted in connection with an incident last February in which an 11-month-old baby was left behind a trash container in Middleway, W.Va., according to court records.

A Jefferson County grand jury this week indicted Theresa Johnson, 29, of 435 Cedar Drive, on a charge of gross neglect of a child creating substantial risk of serious bodily injury or death, according to Jefferson County Circuit Court records.

The baby, identified as Johnson's daughter, was fastened in a car safety seat when police were notified Feb. 7, according to court records.

A man told Trooper Richard Shockey that a woman was spotted near his house with a child in a car seat. The woman was seen again in the same location without the child, according to a criminal complaint filed by Shockey.

The baby was wearing a long-sleeved shirt, a pair of blue jeans and socks, Shockey said.

The infant did not require medical attention, Shockey said.

A conviction on a charge of gross neglect of a child creating substantial risk of serious bodily injury or death carries a punishment of a fine of up to $3,000 and a jail term of from one to five years.
