Winners named in poster contest

The Washington County Soil Conservation District has named the winners of its 2001 Earth Day Poster Contest.

The winners were honored at Tuesday's meeting of the Washington County Commissioners.

Named as winners in the contest, which had the theme Habitat for Humanity, were:

Grades K-1: First place, Emily Simmons, first grade, Paramount Elementary School.

Second place, Abby Harp, first grade, Paramount Elementary School.

Grades 2-3: First place, Elizabeth Kramer, third grade, Paramount.

Michelle Ferreira, third grade, Paramount.

Grades 4-6: First place, Ashley Binau, fourth grade, Paramount.

Second place, Hannah Boward, fifth grade, Paramount.

Grades 7-9: First place, Kristen Waters, ninth grade, Boonsboro High School.

Second place, Christopher Thomas, ninth grade, Boonsboro High School.

Grades 10-12: First place, Brandi Harbaugh, 12th grade, Boonsboro High School.

Second place: Braden King, 10th grade, Boonsboro High School.

The Soil Conservation District awarded each first-place winner a $75 savings bond and each second-place winner a $50 savings bond.

The first-place posters in each category will be forwarded to the state competition, which will be judged in July. State winners go on to a national contest.

The Soil Conservation District has sponsored the contest since 1990. Washington County winners have gone on to win three national contests and many state contests, Soil Conservation District officials said.
