Roundup - Walkersville edges South in pitcher's duel


WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Walkersville scored the winning run on a fielder's choice from a dropped third strike with nobody out in the bottom of eighth inning as the No. 5 Lions squeezed by South Hagerstown 1-0 in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League game on Tuesday.

Jackie Klinger gave up only two hits in eight innings to earn the win for Walkersville (7-1, 7-1).

Alison Higgs allowed only one hit in seven innings for the Rebels (5-3, 3-3).

Both pitchers struck out 10 batters and surrendered just one walk.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Becky Porter raised her record to 4-1 as she gave up two earned runs and one walk while striking out 10 to help James Buchanan beat Fairfield.


Jessica Ross went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Samantha Brown and Jenna Swailes were each 2-for-4 for the Rockets (4-1).

BOONSBORO - Ashley Gray pitched a complete game four-hitter, striking out six while walking none, to lead Boonsboro (2-5, 2-7) over Brunswick in the MVAL.

The Warriors got key hits from pinchhitters Ashley Hageman, Desiree Bowers and Andi Changuris in the pivotal eight-run seventh inning. Ashley Amezcua and Jessie Sirbaugh each had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Alan Webber threw a complete-game two-hitter, striking out nine to help Brunswick beat Boonsboro in the MVAL.

Joe Rusenko ripped a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to spark a seven-run rally for Brunswick (6-2, 5-1).

Matt Lastner and Wayne Toms each went 2-for-4 for the Railroaders. Lastner and Chris Baugher each drove in two runs.

Keith Kellinger hit a two-run homer for Boonsboro (5-3, 4-2).

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - No. 6 Jefferson continues to enjoy the warmer weather (60 degrees) in the Hawaiian Tropic Classic and also continues to win.

Brad Webb (4-0) threw a four-hit, five-inning shutout striking out one and walking none as Jefferson (16-3) improved to 2-0 in the tournament. The Cougars will play Proctor (Utica, N.Y.) today.

Jefferson had 15 hits, including Chris Brooks' solo homer in the first inning. The Cougars broke the game open with a six-run fourth and a 12-run fifth. Brandon Conway had three RBI, Antyon Lee had two hits and two RBI, Justin Dailey had two hits and two RBI, Matt Noll had a two-run triple, Greg Smith had a two-run double.

Pitcher Jason Embly allowed just one earned run in seven innings for Williamsport (4-5, 2-5), which scored four of its five runs on wild pitches. Mike Stevens was 2-for-2.
