The Washington County Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to buy the Air View Apartments near the Hagerstown Regional Airport.

The vote came after a hearing, at which no opposition to the purchase was voiced.

The Airport Commission endorsed the purchase of the property, which also has been known as the Air View Motel.

The county was approached about buying the property at 14542-14546 Pennsylvania Avenue and decided to pursue that idea after the Federal Aviation Administration agreed to pay up to 90 percent of the cost, as it does with many airport projects, Airport Manager Carolyn Motz said.

The cost for the .87-acre property is $236,200, of which the county will pay $11,810. The rest of the money is to be paid for by the Maryland Aviation Administration and the FAA.

The property includes five two-room apartments, one one-room apartment, one double-wide modular home, two mobile homes and one cottage, according to county documents.

The FAA supported the idea that the airport continue to buy land around the airport, Motz said. The county buys air easements to protect the flight path from high structures.

It marks the first time the county has bought a multiple-unit complex and facility, County Administrator Rodney Shoop said.

The airport will handle ownership of the property, Motz said.
