Commission alleges tip jar violations

The Washington County Gaming Commission has cited three Washington County businesses for alleged violations of tip jar rules, Commission Director Vanessa Weaver said Monday.

The Chocolate Park Tavern in Cascade, the Sportsman Den on Franklin Street and the New Del-Mar Inn Restaurant on Route 40 were cited on April 11, Weaver said.

The citations for each location alleged: Operating an illegal tip jar; having a tip jar without a logbook; and not publicly posting the seal announcing the business had a tip jar, she said.

The citation fine amounts are $25,000 for the Del-Mar, $18,000 for Chocolate Park Tavern and $10,000 for Sportsman Den, according to Weaver.

The fines vary because the circumstances for each business were different, such as different number of tip jars, she said.

The managers of the New Del-Mar Inn Restaurant and the Sportsman Den said they had no comment. The Chocolate Park Tavern manager was unavailable for comment Monday.

The establishments have 15 days from the April 11 citation date to appeal to an administrative judge, Weaver said.

On Feb. 24, six Washington County Sheriff's deputies randomly inspected 24 bars, taverns and restaurants, she said.

Random checks are conducted about every two months, Weaver said.
