Cell phone tower request withdrawn

A request for Washington County Board of Zoning Appeals' permission to erect a 195-foot cell phone tower on Lappans Road near Sharpsburg Pike has been withdrawn, at least temporarily.

As a result, there will be no public hearing on the request at Wednesday's Board of Zoning Appeals meeting.

The request could be filed again at a later time. It was withdrawn by the attorney for Strategic Communications Service of Enola, Pa., which made the proposal to put a tower at 18126 Lappans Road, near its crossroad with Sharpsburg Pike.

Two state lawmakers along with the Washington County Historic District Commission and the Antietam National Battlefield superintendent oppose the tower placement, which would be about 5 miles from the battlefield.

Del. Chris Shank, R-Washington, an opponent, said Tuesday he and others will speak against it if the project is returned for county consideration.

"We will be waiting for them when they come back ... we will be just as opposed as we are today," he said.
