Agnes M. Sweeney


Agnes Mae Sweeney, 78, of 1515 W. Church St., Hagerstown, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 8, 1922, in Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Clara Mowen Powell.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown.

She was a member of Hits and Misses Bowling Team.

She is survived by her husband, Carl Luther Sweeney; a daughter, Beverly Ann Fisher of Falling Waters, W.Va.; a son, Michael Sweeney of Hagerstown; a sister, Annice Stelzer of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Oda Harbaugh, and a brother, Max Powell.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North in Hagerstown. The Rev. Quentin Fleming will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Calvin R. Ramsburg


FALLS CHURCH, Va. - Calvin R. Ramsburg, 80, of Falls Church, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Va.

Born Aug. 3, 1920, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Frank Turner and Hilda Bartles Ramsburg.

He was a 1939 graduate of Martinsburg High School.

He retired from the General Services Administration.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Evelyn Wilson Ramsburg; two sisters, Bernadine Thompson and Imogene Rife, both of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and a brother, John Carlton Ramsburg of Texas.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St. in Martinsburg. The Rev. Douglas J. Hollida will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.




Donald M. Shifflett


Donald Merrill Shifflett, 58, of 17 Fourth St., Hagerstown and formerly of 9054 Downsville Pike, Williamsport, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at his home.

Born April 19, 1942, in Hagers-town, he was the son of the late Clarence L. and Rose L. Kaylor Shifflett.

He retired from Jamison Door Co. and was employed for 20 years by Dr. A.F. Abdullah.

He served in the Maryland Army National Guard.

He was a member of Battlefield Bible Church where he served as a deacon.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly E. Shifflett; four daughters, Lisa Hasenbuhler and Donna Shifflett, both of Hagerstown, Denise Groves of Downsville and Cheryl Keplinger of Williamsport; two sons, Allan DeLouney of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Gary DeLouney of Rohrersville; a stepsister, Lois Rutkowski of Dundalk, Md.; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a stepsister, Betty Honeycutt.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Battlefield Bible Church, 7708 Sharpsburg Pike in Fairplay. The Rev. Henry A. Lutz Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. in Hagerstown, and Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the church.

Joanna Stanley


Joanna Croker Stanley, 69, of Avalon Manor, 14014 Marsh Pike, Hagerstown and formerly of 11 W. Baltimore St., died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at the nursing home.

Born April 4, 1931, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Carolyn Maccoun Croker.

She was a 1950 graduate of The Master's School in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. Later, she attended nursing school at John's Hopkins in Baltimore.

She was a homemaker.

She attended Church of the Transfiguration in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.

She is survived by a daughter, Sally T. Stanley of Frederick, Md.; a son, William S. Stanley of Mount Joy, Pa.; two sisters, Carolyn C. Boykin of Ruxton, Md., and Virginia C. Easter of Cockeysville, Md.; a brother, John H. Croker Jr. of LaQuinta, Calif.; three granddaughters; and a grandson.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Church of the Transfiguration, 13646 Summit Ave. in Blue Ridge Summit. The Rev. Daphne S. Killhour will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro, Pa.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St. in Waynesboro.

John W. Whitmer


EL DORADO SPRINGS, Mo. - John William "Jack" Whitmer, 70, of El Dorado Springs, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Overland Park, Kan.

Born Oct. 25, 1930, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late Wesley and Mary Whitmer.

He worked in construction. He also was a truck driver for several years.

He served in the U.S. Air Force.
