SMITHSBURG - Catoctin's Krystal Topper has the ability to control a softball game not only with her pitching, but with her hitting, as well.

It was her explosive bat that broke open a close contest Thursday as she hit a three-run homer in the top of the fifth inning leading Catoctin to an 11-2 victory over Smithsburg in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League game.

Topper, who is a junior, was glad that her home run helped to raise Catoctin's lead to 8-2 in the fifth.

"We were all down on ourselves and then that three-run homer really boosted up our team," Topper said. "We were hitting the ball after that. I got that home run on a fastball right down the center. That was a perfect pitch to hit."

Topper gave up one earned run in five innings to improve her pitching record to 2-1.

Shawna Wilkes then finished up with two scoreless innings of relief for Catoctin (4-1).

"I knew that I had to pretty much throw strikes," Topper added. "I was able to hit the corners and that helped me."

Topper ended up with five RBI, three hits and one run scored on offense. Both Ashley Miller and Wilkes ripped three hits and scored two runs for the Cougars. Wilkes added three RBI.

Renee Palmer led the Leopards with two hits.

"Krystal Topper's three-run homer was awesome," Catoctin coach Sue Weaver said. "It just exploded off of the bat and it found the gap."

"I had eight players graduate," Smithsburg coach Brian Getz said. "We're young and we're rebuilding. Eight of our 12 players this year are freshmen or sophomores. But I am really happy with the girls that I have. They are energetic and enthusiastic."
