Cut through the clutter

Heloise recommends implementing "The Five Minutes" or "Five Things Plan" for "clutter busting." She focuses on one task for five minutes every day, or picks up, puts away or throws out five items from one drawer, shelf or closet.

What can you do about stacks of magazines or a "jumble" of books? Put everything in baskets, Heloise says. She gathered piles of videotapes and put them in two matching wicker baskets. They have a neat spot on top of her big-screen television.

Heloise jazzed up the "bachelor chairs" her husband brought to their marriage 20 years ago. They are comfortable but have upholstery of "fuzzy brown stuff" that looks like shag carpet.

She draped "bamboo-ish" material over the chairs, tucked it down beside the cushions, and anchored it in back with safety pins. "It looks fabulous," Heloise says.
