Fairgrounds Park to hold grand opening on May 12

Hagerstown's Fairgrounds Park will open with a parade and fireworks on May 12, the Mayor and City Council decided Tuesday.

The grand opening had been scheduled for May 5, but that is the date of the Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester, Va., so the council agreed to move the Fairgrounds grand opening back a week.

The Fairgrounds grand opening celebration will begin around 10 a.m. with a parade that will step off at Municipal Stadium and end at the Fairgrounds. Fireworks are scheduled for 9 p.m.

The event is expected to cost $6,900 plus $5,000 in city services.

Fairgrounds Park is a new outdoor recreational center covering about 68 acres in the northeast corner of downtown Hagerstown. The park has soccer and softball fields and miles of walking trails.
