Arson case postponed

An arson case against a Funkstown man accused of trying to set fire to his house was postponed Thursday in Washington County Circuit Court.

Dennis Eugene Shank Jr., 51, of 109 Maple St. in Funkstown, is charged with first-degree arson and threat to burn.

Fire officials said that the Dec. 15, 2000, fire at Shank's house caused an estimated $50,000 in damage.

Shank also was charged with reckless endangerment for allegedly filling his house with natural gas on Nov. 27, 2000, and threatening to blow it up while still inside.

Assistant Washington County State's Attorney Charles Strong said that Shank's attorney filed a "not criminally responsible" motion on Thursday, and his case was postponed so he could be evaluated.
