Tuesday's Local Roundup - Hawks sweep two vs. Corning


Hagerstown Community College swept NJCAA Division III No. 1 Corning Community College 11-2 and 5-1 in a doubleheader at HCC on Monday.

Kim Twigg's grand slam in the third inning was the offensive highlight of he first game. Heather Danley, Mary Beth Kennell and Robin Curley had two hits, Kennell had three RBI and Danley scored three runs for HCC.

Cory Reed (4-0) pitched a five-inning complete game, allowing three hits and no earned runs while striking out five and walking one in improving to 4-0.

Andria Cook (5-1) pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and no earned runs, striking out six and walking one in the second game for the Hawks (9-1). Kennell had four hits, while Twigg, Curley and Erin Ross added two.

HCC 2-3, Alfred State 1-7

Hagerstown Community College split a doubleheader with Alfred State.

In the first game, Reagan Smith hit the winning single in the bottom of the ninth for the Hawks (12-3). P.J. Hiser had a solo home run, while Brooks Williams had two hits.

In the second game, Will Zimniewicz had a double and a home run and drove in three runs for HCC.

North 11, Catoctin 4

THURMONT, Md. - Bobby Long had two hits, including a double, as North Hagerstown scored eight runs in the third inning to take down Catoctin in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League contest.

Matt Johnson added a triple for the Hubs, while Matt Bellon earned the win for North (1-2), allowing seven hits and one earned run while striking out 10 in a complete game. Jesse Bennaka had a two-run double and Tanner Cross added two RBI.

Justus Yocum went 2-for-4 with a double for Catoctin (2-1).

South 4, Williamsport 3

Walter Drill had the game-winning RBI single for the Rebels (1-2).

Gary Naile and Derrick Sweigert had two hits for the Wildcats. Eric Fitzgerald had a pinch-hit double in the sixth and drove in two.

Middletown 21, Smithsburg 2

SMITHSBURG - Chris Rhoades and Cliff O'Meara had two RBI for Middletown.



Anderson, Lane (4) and Jennings. Myers, Smith (3), Barnhart (4) and Fouff, Bachtell (5). WP - Anderson (1-0). LP - Myers. HR - Eric Russel (2nd, one on).

Hancock 4, St. James 3

HANCOCK - Justin Moore had a two-run double and earned the win on the mound as Hancock built a 4-1 lead and held on.

Moore pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs, one earned, while waking four and striking out four for the Panthers (2-1). Doug Steiner had two hits and two RBI.

Ryan Wingard had two hits and two RBI for St. James. He pitched a complete game six-hitter, allowing four runs, two earned, and two walks while fanning nine in the loss.

Chambersburg 5, Gettysburg 3

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Andy Stottlemyer pitched a complete game, giving up three hits, striking out four and walking two for the Trojans (2-2, 1-0 Mid Penn).

Chambersburg managed only four hits, but stole three bases, all of which led to runs. Gettysburg scored two runs in the seventh with the help of two Trojan errors.

Greencastle 6, J. Buchanan 2

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Brad Fitz (1-0) struck out 16 in a complete-game win, allowing four hits, one earned run and one walk.

Fitz struck out the side on 10 pitches in the fourth inning, and needed just nine pitches to accomplish the feat in the sixth. He also went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Zach Barkdoll had a two-run triple for the Blue Devils (3-0), while Ricky Boward had two hits and Eric Ile had two hits, an RBI and two stolen bases.

Jefferson 27, Bishop Walsh 0

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Brandon Conway had three hits and five RBI and Donell Lee added three RBI as the Cougars scored 14 runs in the first inning.

Fifteen different players had hits for Jefferson, and all 27 runs were earned.
