Town sponsors youth talent show

SHARPSBURG - The Town of Sharpsburg donated $750 to sponsor the youth talent show at this year's Washington County Ag Expo, officials said Tuesday.

The town wrote the check last month after Town Council members asked Councilman and Ag Expo President Hal Spielman if there was anything the town could do to help the annual event.

Last year's expo was the first one Spielman could recall losing money, about $500.

Usually the event makes about $2,000 in profit, which is banked in case of bad weather or a shortfall, Spielman said. If rain hadn't forced the cancellation of the rodeo last year, the expo would have made money, he said.

The expo is financed with ticket sales, a contribution from the Maryland Agricultural Fair Board and sponsorships of trophies for various events, Spielman said.

Sharpsburg Mayor Sid Gale said he thought it was a good idea for the towns to contribute to the ag expo and Washington County Agricultural Education Center.

He encouraged other towns to do the same.

Spielman said 15-20 youths belong to the Sharpsburg 4-H Club, which meets at Town Hall.
