Two county farms' taxes set aside for 10 years

The County Commissioners Tuesday designated two Smithsburg area farms as agriculture preservation districts.

That decision came after public hearings Tuesday to consider farm properies owned by John Clagett and Samuel Hunter.

Clagett's 186-acre dairy farm is at 11310 Mapleville Road. Hunter's 68-acre beef and crop farm is at 23130 Welty Church Road.

The applicants volunteered to put their farms into 10-year agriculture preservation districts.

In exchange for agreeing not to develop their land for 10 years, Clagett and Hunter will pay no county tax on the land or farm buildings, said Eric Seifarth, farmland preservation adminstrator.
