Local roundup - Higgs fires a gem, Cadets edge Martinsburg


BRUNSWICK, Md. - Allison Higgs fired a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and helped her cause with a grand slam as South Hagerstown crushed Brunswick 15-0 in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League game on Tuesday.

Higgs finished with six RBIs for the Rebels (1-1, 1-1). Mallory Tsetsilas added three hits, including two doubles.

Frederick 3, Martinsburg 1

FREDERICK, Md. - Frederick's Candy Warden (2-0) struck out nine, walked one and allowed four hits in a complete-game victory over Marrtinsburg.


Martinsburg scored a run in the first inning but faulty defense and timely hitting gave the Cadets the lead in the fourth. Nicole Fuller singled, took second on an error and went to third on a Warden single. Joyce Tsikerdanos bounced into a fielder's choice, scoring Fuller, and then reached second on an error. Another error put runners on first and third and Amelia Barnard drove in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice bunt.

Two more errors helped Frederick (2-0) add an insurance run in the fifth.

Christee Anderson was the hard-luck loser for Martinsburg as she allowed only the two hits in the fourth inning.

Walkersville 12, Boonsboro 0

BOONSBORO - Jackie Klinger tossed a four-hitter to lead Walkersville over Boonsboro in the MVAL.

Ashley Gray struck out four for Boonsboro (0-2, 0-2).

Middletown 14, North 3

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Megan Enders had two hits, including a home run, and Middletown erupted for 11 runs in the fourth inning as the Knights beat North Hagerstown in the MVAL.

Joanna Kline and Jessica Metzner each had two hits for Middletown (3-0, 3-0). Enders drove in three runs, while Metzner and Shannon Sturtz each drove in two runs. Megan Pilarcik struck out 10 to earn the victory.

SMITHSBURG - Winning pitcher Amy Miller went 2-for-3 with two RBI and struck out six to lead Smithsburg to an MVAL win.

Jenelle Stouffer added two doubles and an RBI for the Leopards (1-1, 1-1).

Boonsboro 6, Walkersville 1

BOONSBORO - Chris Wright and Andy Kaetzel combined on a four-hitter with six strikeouts as Boonsboro knocked off Walkersville in the MVAL.

Nathan Himes had three hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs for the Warriors (1-1, 1-1). Keith Kellinger added two doubles.

Ryan O'Planick broke up Wright's bid for a no-hitter with a line drive down the third-base line in the fifth inning for Walkersville (2-1, 2-1).

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Ryan McQuillen, Chris Rhoades and Eric Russell each had two hits to lead Middletown over North Hagerstown in the MVAL.

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Jeremy Barnes hit a pair of two-run home runs and Greencastle turned a triple play to end a rally in the fifth inning as the Blue Devils held on to beat Middletown (Pa.).

Tony Showalter also homered for Greencastle (1-0).
