Ruth J. Green


WEST JEFFERSON, Ohio - Ruth Jane Green, 86, of Arbors West, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Thursday, March 22, 2001.

Born Oct. 29, 1915, in Washington County, Md., she was the daughter of the late Harry Willis Wallick and Elizabeth B. Zimmerman.

Her husband of 50 years, Jacob Parker Green, died in 1986.

She was a member of First Christian Church, Hagerstown.

She is survived by two daughters, Lois Wolfinger of Hagerstown, and Judy Arganbright of West Jefferson; a son, Robert Green of West Jefferson; a sister, Ethel Green of Hagerstown; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Edyth Wallick and Mary Gearhart; and two brothers, Clarence Wallick and John Wallick.

Services will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. The Rev. Fred Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

Visitation will be held today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

M. Kathryn Smith


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - M. Kathryn Small Smith, 90, of Penn Hall Nursing Home, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, following a lengthy illness.

Born March 25, 1910, in Guilford Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late H. Clayton and Anna Mary Wagner Small.

Her husband, Dr. Forrest F. Smith, died Aug. 10, 1985.

She was a 1928 graduate of Chambersburg High School, and a 1931 graduate of Germantown Dispensary and Hospital School of Nursing, Philadelphia.

She was a private duty registered nurse in Philadelphia from 1931 to 1937. For 30 years from 1950 to 1980, she assisted her late husband in the operation of his medical practice in the Professional Arts Building.

She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was a member and past president of the W.E.L.C.A., a member of the Augusburg Sunday School Class, and was organizer and chairperson of the wedding reception committee.

She was a member and volunteer with the American Red Cross, a member and past president of the Auxiliary of the Franklin County Medical Society, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Chambersburg Hospital.

She is survived by two daughters, Deborah S. Mallory of Philadelphia, and Barbara S. Montgomery of Chambersburg; a son, Forrest M. Smith of New Castle, Va.; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two daughters.

Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Revs. Charles W. Kampmeyer and Ruth Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery.

Visitation will be held today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, and Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Martha K. McDowell


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Martha K. McDowell, 88, a resident of Penn Hall Nursing Home, and formerly of 3225 Parnell Drive, St. Thomas, Pa., died Friday, March 24, 2001, at the home.

Born Oct. 21, 1912, in St. Thomas, she was the daughter of the late William B. and Laura Kendall McDowell.

She was a graduate of Lemasters High School, Lemasters, Pa. She was also a graduate of Lock Haven University, Lock Haven, Pa.

She taught kindergarten and first grade in the Chambersburg School District from 1946 until her retirement in 1976.

She was a member of Presbyterian Church of Mercersburg, Pa., where she was active in the Women's Association and the church newsletter. She also taught Sunday School for many years.

She was a member of Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Gettysburg, Pa.

She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Thomas of Wyomissing, Pa.; a brother, Robert A. McDowell of Lemasters; three nephews, William R. McDowell of Lemasters, Thomas C. McDowell of Chambersburg, and John H. McDowell of Greencastle, Pa.; grand-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary C. McDowell; and a brother, James W. McDowell.

Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Presbyterian Church of Mercersburg. The Rev. Michael K. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Lemasters.

The family will receive friends Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the church.
