CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Both boys and girls will have the opportunity to tour the county courthouse and shadow their parents on "Take Our Children to Work Day" April 26.

This year's program is a departure from the past, when Franklin County participated in the national "Take Our Daughters to Work Day."

"As a father of two young sons, I think it's great," said Franklin County Commissioner G. Warren Elliott, before the commissioners lent their approval to the change in program last week. "Neither of my boys have been in to see me work."

Every year, the county Human Resources Department handles requests from employees to allow their sons as well as their daughters the chance to explore where their parents work, said Nipa Browder, personnel officer.

Many organizations locally and nationwide are widening the scope of the day to include boys and girls, she said.

"We recognize that boys and girls both have some developmental needs, which are similar," Browder said.

The program is open to the children of county employees in kindergarten through the 12th grade.

The Franklin County Commissioners will meet with all participants and their sponsors in the Jury Assembly Room on the third floor of the courthouse at 10 a.m. followed by a tour of the county courthouse.

"This has been a real good, successful event," Browder said.

All participating children must obtain prior approval from their respective schools by submitting a field trip form.

Each participating girl and boy will receive a Certificate of Attendance from the Franklin County Board of Commissioners.
