Monroe joins FCC in final



Bilisa Perkins led Monroe with 19 points while the Tribunes' defense held Waldorf's offense in check 61-53 to win a second consecutive berth in the national championship game today against Frederick.

Monroe lost to Johnson County in last year's finals.

The Tribunes took a 39-28 lead at the half, using five 3-pointers in the first 12 1/2 minutes of play to stake the lead. Jamie Sheridan came off the bench to hit three of them for her only nine points of the game.

Monroe's lead grew to 49-30 in the second half before Waldorf made a comeback run that came with six points before fizzling.

Christina Volpe had 12 points for Monroe. Krista Van Hauen led Waldorf with 18 while Carrie Norman added 13.

NW-Shoals 68 Johnson City 62

Jennifer Blankenship scored 21 of her game-high 30 points in the first half to lift Northwest-Shoals (Ala.) into today's fifth-place final while eliminating Johnson County (Kan.), the defending national champions, from the tournament.

The Patriots broke an 18-18 tie with an 8-0 run, keyed by five Blankenship points, to take a 26-18 lead with 8:03 left in the half. NW-Shoals followed with a 15-4 rally in the final seven minutes of the half to pull away to a 41-28 lead at the intermission.

Kalamazoo Valley 88 Lake Land 61

Danaea Williams hit 21of her 25 points, including four straight 3-pointers, in the second half to help Kalamazoo Valley (Mich.), the top-rated junior college team, pull away to an easy win and secure a spot in the fifth-place game.

Kalamazoo scratched to a 33-27 lead, but extended it to 20-points by the 13-minute mark of the second half.

Williams also had 11 rebounds while April Danzy added 17 points and eight rebounds and Carrie Vlietstra had 14 points.
