Mail Call for 3/23

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I feel all school bus drivers nationwide need a pay raise, especially with all the violence going on with the school students. This job should pay like prison guards or state police. We are not hauling cattle, it is your child's life and it is in our hands. Wake up, Board of Education."

"I am calling concerning Mr. Bartlett. He said that he has so many things to accomplish. Let me tell you, he started to accomplish some things, but I hope that he is never able to end. He needs to take care of the bus drivers, the assistants and other things. I mean, pay wise. These drivers are dropping out like flies and so are the assistants. He better step down before we are carried away and don't have anything."

"In regards to the people complaining about school being delayed that one day: I have news for you, Washington County runs from Hancock clean up to Cascade. It is not only the Hagerstown Schools that are in Washington County. If you have a problem with it, take it up with the Board of Ed."

"In the paper, there was a woman looking for someone to take care of her 9-month-old baby. If she wanted a baby, she should stay home, instead of letting someone raise it. Stay home and be a mom."

"What will happen to the schools at Conococheague, Funkstown and the other schools if they close them down and build other schools? What will they do with all that property? I think the Board of Education should do some extra thinking and cut down on some of the fat at their office on Commonwealth Avenue."

"I am calling about the Ryan's Restaurant. They are moving in front of the old Wal-Mart on Wesel Boulevard, not in front of the new one."

"I see the city of Hagerstown is purchasing stop signs for different intersections to make them four- way stops. This is a good idea, but the problem is this: Nobody stops at them anyway, so why not just put up yield signs?"

"I wish we could go back to having just good old fashioned friendly service. It is missing a lot these days. I miss the good old days when you have the people pumping your gas. Nowadays it seems like we are gearing towards, rush, rush, rush, a fast paced world. When you call up a company, it sure would be nice to get a speaking voice, not an endless array of long voicemail messages. I wish they would go back to having employees instead of voicemails where you have to listen to their long list of options and being on hold. By that time, you feel like nobody wants to listen to your concerns at all."

"Would the person calling about school days, stop worrying about it and just enjoy your children a little longer during the day."

"I saw a blue jay outside on Tuesday. Aren't they out of season? Shouldn't I be seeing robins?"

"Where is the correspondent for the West End and East End? We have them for the North End and South End and Funkstown, various things. You are advertising for one in Hancock, well what about the West and East ends?"

"This is Robin Ryan calling, to all the people who made or bought caps for our babies at the Washington County Hospital, I would like to send you all thank you notes. However I misplaced some of your addresses and names. So if you would give me a call at 301-393-8528 and leave your name and address, I would appreciate it a lot."

"To the person who wanted to know how to repair a burn hole in carpet. I suggest that you take some glue and put it in the hole and shave some of the knap off the rug in a place where it doesn't show. It works if the hole is small."

"Congratulations to the Clear Spring High School Blazer Band for winning first prize in the Baltimore St. Patrick's Day Parade on Sunday. The boosters are very proud of you."

"Can anyone out there recommend a good all-purpose fertilizer for a garden?"

"To the person who called in concerning Mark Lowery on Broadway. His video will be showed on April 7 on Pax Network and then on April 14 on TNN. You will have to check your TV Guide for the time."

"I give thumbs up to the well- written letter to the editor on hunting and trapping."
