HCC earns split

COCOA BEACH, Fla. - Isaac Henry hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to help Hagerstown Community College complete a comeback from a four-run deficit Wednesday to lift the Hawks to a 6-5 win over Schenectady (N.Y.) Community College, the No. 11-ranked junior college team in the country.

The rally allowed HCC (7-2) to earn a split in a two-game set after the Hawks dropped a 3-1 decision to Alfred College in the early session. The win over Schenectady gave HCC a 4-1 record on its southern trip and was the second victory over a nationally ranked team this week.

HCC fell behind 5-1 after three innings before scoring two in the fourth and winning the game on Henry's blast. Jeff Kirkpatrick won his second game while Nathan Butts picked up his third save of the season.

Brooks Williams had three hits while Andy Smith had two doubles and Darrell Clopper added two hits and an RBI.

In the opener, Alfred pitcher Van Gorder fired a one-hitter while striking out 13 and drove in a pair of runs to pace the win.

Williams, HCC's second hitter of the game, tripled in the first and scored on a passed ball for the Hawks only run.
