Mary V. Shryock


Mary Virginia Shryock, 93, of 55 E. Washington St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village.

Born July 12, 1907, in Stephens City, Va., she was the daughter of the late Hugh A. and Ernestine Browning Funk.

Her husband, James R. Shryock, died in 1952.

She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy L. Raymer and Janet L. Smith, both of Hagerstown; one son, James B. Shryock of Maugansville; one sister, Alice L. Funk of Stephens City; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, three brothers and one grandson.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Greenhill Cemetery in Stephens City. The Rev. John Ericson will officiate.

Friends may call Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Paul D. Elliott Sr.


Paul D. Elliott Sr., 57, of 201 Avon Road, Hagerstown, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at his home.

Born Jan. 3, 1944, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Woodrow Wilson Elliott and Pearl Cornelis Wolff Elliott.

He was a former employee of Grove Worldwide in Shady Grove, Pa.

He attended Emmanuel Baptist Temple.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela S. Elliott, whom he married April 28, 1993; three daughters, Carrie S. Elliott and Diane M. Elliott, both of Mercersburg, Pa., and Ashley N. Elliott, at home; two sons, Matthew P. Elliott and Paul D. Elliott Jr., both at home; two sisters, Hester V. Morris of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Gertrude A. Eaton of Hagerstown; three brothers, James O. Elliott of Clear Spring, Russell E. Elliott of Hagerstown and Marvin W. Elliott of Santee, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy R. Kelley.

Services were held Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Ed Hampton officiated. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.




Carol A. Echols


LA PLATA, Md. - Carol Ann Echols, 61, of 806 Severn Drive, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at her home.

Born July 16, 1939, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Hilton Charles and Mary Tolson Smith.

She attended Immaculata High School in NW Washington, D.C.; and Goucher College in Towson, Md.

She owned and operated La Plata Florist Inc. She and her husband also owned Arehart-Echols Funeral Home.

She was a past president of Charles County Garden Club; past regent of Port Tobacco Daughters of the American Revolution; and a past president of La Plata Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Garyton Colvard Echols Jr., whom she married June 21, 1958; four daughters, Tessa Babbitt Echols Henderson of Port Tobacco, Md., Mary C. Lindamood of Charlotte Hall, Md., Barbara Echols Moffatt of Gaithersburg, Md. and Nancy Lee Murrah of Cedar Park, Texas; two sons, David C. Echols of La Plata and Garyton Colvard Echols III of Waldorf, Md.; a sister, Nancy Smith of Waynesboro, Pa.; and a brother, Hilton C. Smith Jr. of Hagerstown; 10 grandchildren; five nieces and nephews; and a great-nephew.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Matthew Siekierski will officiate. Burial will be in St. George Church Cemetery in Valley Lee, Md.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home in La Plata, with prayers at 7 p.m.

Loveus G. Smith


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Loveus G. Foster Smith, 81, of 545 Maple St., died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Manorcare Health Services in Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Jan. 16, 1920, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Frank B. and Rosa I. Cline Foster.

She attended Waynesboro schools.

She was a homemaker and had worked as a waitress.

She was a Protestant.

She was a member of National AARP.

She is survived by her husband, Ples James Smith Sr., whom she married Sept. 4, 1937; one daughter, Barbara Ann Shank of Waynesboro; one son, Ples J. Smith Jr. of Hanover, Pa.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn F. Swope; five brothers, Ralph Foster, Charles Foster, Stewart William Foster, Zackery Foster and Norman Foster.

Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. James T. Williams will officiate.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

There will be no public viewing.
