The Washington County Commissioners Tuesday appointed David Herbst to fill a vacancy on the Agricultural Land Preservation Advisory Board.

The vote was unanimous.

The Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday designated March 18-24 Home Chemical Safety Week.

The Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) has developed a new home chemical safety program for the county school system.

A countywide poster contest was held, with winners to receive gift packages valued at $200, $125 and $100. The gift packages were provided by local business sponsors.

Seventy students from three schools - Boonsboro, Salem Avenue and Hickory - participated in the contest.

Commissioner Bert L. Iseminger announced the results of the poster contest.

-- First Place winner: Ben Benner of Salem Avenue Elementary.

-- Second place winner: Kathleen Prather of Salem Avenue.

-- Third place winners: Gabrielle Rissman of Boonsboro Elementary and Danny Fraser of Hickory Elementary.

The winners will appear on local radio and television programs, and the grand prize winning posters will be shown on a TV commercial.
