Local Roundup - Hawks win fifth straight


COCOA BEACH, Fla. - Hagerstown Community College broke out to an 11-1 lead after two innings, then withstood Genessee's nine-run rally in the fourth to hold on for a 14-12 victory on Tuesday, the Hawks' fifth straight.

Regan Smith had two triples and an RBI for HCC (6-1). Jeff Kirkpatrick hit a solo homer, while P.J. Hiser had an RBI triple and Andy Smith had a two-run single.

Rick Swauger pitched three innings, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out five in a no-decision.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd coach Wayne Riser earned his 200th victory in a doubleheader sweep of Oswego State.


Brian Powell dominated the first game, pitching a complete game three-hitter, striking out six while walking two. Jon Serrano hit a two-run homer and an RBI double, while Jimmy Jackson added a solo homer.

Adam Straskulic's 4-for-4, three-RBI performance highlighted the second game for the Rams (3-8). Justin Collins scattered seven hits in six innings for the win.

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Rams split a doubleheader with Washington.

Shepherd (7-4) came back from an 8-2 deficit to win the first game.

Nicole Gantt hit a three-run homer and Melanie Okun had a two-run double to draw Shepherd even, before Chrissy Ashley drove in Gantt with the game-winning run in the seventh inning.

Shippensburg on TV

Shippensburg's NCAA Division II "Elite 8" women's basketball game today against Delta State will be broadcast on Comcast Cable's public access channel in Franklin County, Pa.

The game, held in Rochester, Minn., is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
