Stadium tennis courts may become a new parking area

A plan to expand the parking lot at Hagerstown's Municipal Stadium onto adjacent tennis and basketball courts is being considered by the Mayor and City Council.

City Engineer Bruce Johnston presented a plan Tuesday that would add 64 spaces to the parking lot by connecting the existing lot to the courts.

Council members said that while it seems the tennis courts at the stadium are used only rarely, the basketball courts seem to be used frequently.

Councilman Lewis C. Metzner suggested constructing the additional parking areas so that the basketball court can be left alone.

The basketball court would be used for parking only on game days, Metzner said.

Councilwoman Susan Saum-Wicklein said Johnston should consult with Recreation Department Manager Douglas Stull, and then return to the council.

Metzner said perhaps basketball courts could be added to the existing parking lot for use on nongame days.
