Alfred C. Roth Jr.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Alfred C. Roth Jr., 93, of Owings Mills and formerly of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at the home of his daughter.

Born Dec. 25, 1907, in North Ridgeville, Ohio, he was the son of the late Alfred C. and Alice Marie Landphair Roth.

He was a graduate of Ohio University, receiving a degree in education. He played with the Sammy Kaye Band while at Ohio University.

He was supervisor of Industrial and Vocational Education and established the Washington County Vocational Technical Center on the campus of Hagerstown Junior College.

He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown.

He was a member of Friendship Lodge 84, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Elks Lodge 378, where he served as organist, Fountain Head Country Club and Retired Teachers Association.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Addie Bertha Butler Roth; a daughter, Susan E. Steinweg of Owings Mills, with whom he lived; four sons, Franklin D. Roth of Houston, Jan B. Roth of Lexington Park, Md., Eric S. Roth of Mercersburg, Pa., and William G. Roth of Hagerstown; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Saturday, March 31, at 1 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown.

Charles W. Martz

Charles William Martz, 79, of 132 Buttercup Drive, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Born Nov. 28, 1921, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Charles William Martz Sr. and Gladys Olivia Wilhide Martz.

He was employed by Fairchild Aircraft for 43 years, retiring in 1984.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He was a member of Salem Reformed United Church of Christ and the Binkley Sunday School Class.

He also was a member of American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42, Fairchild Retirees Local 842 and Maugansville Senior Citizens.

He is survived by his wife, June R. Martz, whom he married in 1950; a son, Gerald Martz of Westminster, Md.; and two granddaughters, Stephanie M. Martz and Melinda O. Martz, both of Westminster.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy M. Martz.

Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Steve Wagoner will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Salem Reformed Church, 13182 Salem Church Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740.




William C. Glover

William Clooney "Mickey" Glover, 90, of Hagerstown, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Sept. 6, 1910, in Roanoke, Va., he was the son of the late Bernard William and Sara Frances Glover.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Lillian Oden Glover, in 1982.

He had been a chef at various restaurants in the area.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a Methodist.

He had played semi-professional football.

He is survived by two nieces and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Reginald Glover, Bernard Glover and Raymond Glover.

Graveside services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Middleway Masonic Cemetery in Middleway, W.Va.

There will be no visitation.

Charlene L. Blackburn

Charlene Lorraine Blackburn, 43, of 440 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Washington County Hospital.

Born June 5, 1957, in Youngstown, Ohio, she was the daughter of Carrol L. Platt Carpenter of Hagerstown and the late Marion S. Blackburn.

She worked at various restaurants in the Hagerstown area for more than 25 years.

She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Brenda L. Shoop of Jacksonville, N.C.; a son, Donald L. Netz Jr. of Hagerstown; a sister, Debra A. Reed of Hagerstown; two brothers, Anthony L. Blackburn and Robert A. Blackburn, both of Hagerstown; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport. The Rev. Anthony L. Blackburn will officiate.

There will be no visitation.

William T. Swartz

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - William T. "Bill" Swartz, 88, of Charles Town, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.

Born Jan. 21, 1913, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Clarence and Emma Baker Swartz.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Delva Hirst Edwards Swartz, in 1993.
