Man gets 18 months in assault

A Kearneysville, W.Va., man serving a six-year prison sentence for drug distribution was handed an additional 18 months Tuesday in Washington County Circuit Court for assaulting a Hagerstown man last October.

Vonzelle W. Carey pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree assault. The state's attorney's office dropped robbery charges in exchange for his guilty plea.

Carey entered Butch Strickland's apartment in the 200 block of South Prospect Street at 10 p.m. Oct. 5., Assistant Washington County State's Attorney Arthur Rozes told Judge Donald Beachley.

Carey punched Strickland and demanded money he claimed Strickland owed him, Rozes said.

The unconscious Strickland was taken to Washington County Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

"All I want is restitution for my medical bills," said Strickland, who was present in court Tuesday.

Beachley imposed a five-year sentence, but suspended all but 18 months to be added to the sentence Carey is serving at the Eastern Correctional Institution.

Beachley also ordered Carey to pay Strickland $700.
