High school student killed in cave-in



McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - A Southern Fulton High School senior was killed Saturday morning when the 12-foot-deep ditch in which he was working caved in on him, Pennsylvania State Police in McConnellsburg, Pa., said.

Kenneth Wayne Swope, 18, of Needmore, Pa., was buried under more than 1 1/2 feet of dirt at about 9:30 a.m., police said.

Swope was working on a crew that was laying sewer pipe at the intersection of Schoolhouse and Sipes Mill roads, police said.

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m.

It took co-workers and rescue crews about a half-hour to dig Swope out, police said.

He was revived by ambulance crews and flown to Connemaugh Hospital in Johnstown, Pa. He was pronounced dead at 11:24 p.m.

The cause of death was listed as complications from asphyxiation, police said.
