Wildcats cannot rebound

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Southern Garrett worked hard on boxing out under the boards - so hard that the Rams boxed Williamsport right out of the playoffs Saturday night with a 57-49 victory in the Class 1A West final at Fort Hill High School.

"In the first half, we literally gave up two offensive rebounds,'' Southern Garrett Don Stemple said. "Boxing out is one thing that we practice on. We try to keep them from getting any second shots.''

Southern Garrett (20-5) limited Williamsport (19-7) to just one shot on nearly every possession on the evening and led nearly the entire game.

Brooke Weimer gave Williamsport an early edge on a layup with 1:20 left in the first quarter, but Southern Garrett took the lead for good when Liller made a layup with two seconds left in the period for an 12-11 lead.

The Rams gradually expanded their lead to 25-17 by halftime behind eight points from Liller.

Williamsport closed the gap to 27-23 with 6:21 left in the third quarter when Jess Ross scored off an offensive rebound. Southern Garrett's lead ballooned to 41-30 by period's end.

The Rams took their biggest lead at 46-33 with 5:10 left in the third. The Wildcats managed to chop the lead to 51-47 with 36 seconds left in the game when Weimer converted a steal into a layup.

The Rams sealed the region title with a 6-2 run to close the game.

"You have to give credit to Southern Garret,'' Williamsport coach Curtis Graff said. "They executed their offense very well. But, you also have to give credit to our team because we have battled hard every step of the way. A lot of people didn't pick us to win 10 games but here we are in the regional finals.

"Our five seniors were just awesome. You can't find five kids who exemplify heart more than them. If our young kids continue to improve, we'll be back again.''
