TOWSON, Md. - The first time St. Maria Goretti played Towson Catholic on Jan. 13, the Gaels lost by 26. Goretti then dropped a 56-54 heartbreaker to the Owls in the rematch Feb. 9.

But in the game that really mattered - the Baltimore Catholic League Tournament championship on Sunday - Goretti found a way to win.

Tournament MVP Matt Tanner scored 24 points, Rodney Gibson had 17 and the Gaels made 24 of 33 free throws - including 14 straight in the second half - before withstanding Towson Catholic's fourth-quarter rally for a 59-53 victory at Goucher College.

"Friday night (against St. Joseph's) our foul shooting kinda hurt us, but we won anyway," Tanner said. "Tonight, we hit them."

Goretti is 4-0 in BCL Tournament finals. The Gaels won three straight from 1985 to 1987 in their only other finals appearances.

While Gibson struggled in the first half, Tanner picked up the slack, scoring six of Goretti's first seven points during an opening 9-2 run before scoring the Gaels' final seven points of the half for a 23-16 lead at intermission, often working against taller Towson Catholic defenders.

"He stepped into the void," Goretti coach Cokey Robertson said. "He really played exceptional tonight. He uses his body very well."

The Gaels extended their lead to as many as 14 in the second half behind clutch free throw shooting and a couple big shots from All-Tournament selection Derrick Davis, who made back-to-back jumpers to end the third quarter, the second one while fading away from the basket with two seconds left for a 41-30 lead.

Davis made two foul shots with 5:45 left in the game for a 47-35 lead, when Carmello Anthony took Towson Catholic on his back and put a scare into the Gaels.

Anthony scored 16 of his 28 points, including all four of his 3-pointers, in the final 5:15. His layup on a breakaway with 3:26 left closed an 11-2 run - nine coming from Anthony himself - and cut Goretti's lead to three.

But the Gaels scored the next five points on 3 of 4 foul shots and a Tanner layup on a breakaway to reclaim an eight-point lead, 54-46, with 1:37 left. Towson Catholic never got closer than six the rest of the way.

"(Cokey) told us to calm down and get good shots," Tanner said. "The clock was in our favor, and for them to stop the clock, they were going to have to foul us."

"We slowed (Anthony) down I thought the last three minutes," Robertson said. "We got rebounds, and we made our free throws down the stretch."

Davis and Matt Spierenburg both had nine points, joining Tanner and Gibson as the only players to score for Goretti.
