Region titles not needed for state success

WESTMINSTER, Md. - While winning a region title is prestigious, it's not necessary to win gold in the Md. State Wrestling Tournament.

Four area wrestlers - North Hagerstown's Chad Coles, Middletown's Brandon Keller and Williamsport's Corey Leggett and Matt Allen - none of them region champions - advanced to today's championship semifinals, which begin at noon at Western Maryland College.

Coles, a 4A/3A West Region third-place winner, scored two decisions to advance to today's 275-pound semifinal round. Coles, a senior, defeated Eastern Technical's Billy Farmer 7-2 and Parkside's Daniel Muir, 5-1.

Coles (29-6) will meet LaPlata's Josh Geisbert (30-4) in today's semifinal.

In 2A/1A, Keller (29-5) advanced to the 140 semifinal with two decisions, including a 6-2 quarterfinal win over Brandon Morris of Bohemia Manor.

"My goal, as it has been all year, is to win states,'' Keller said. "I'll face a state champion (Kent County's Mikey Blake, 34-1). We'll see what happens.''

Leggett (25-8), who placed fourth in the state at 103 last year, posted two decisions to reach the 119 semifinal against Kent County's Brian Fox (32-3), a region runner-up himself.

"It really doesn't matter about regions,'' Leggett said. "I knew I'd come in here and wrestle well. I think I'm being aggressive enough - some of the time. I had a good takedown in my first match and had a good one in my second match. I'll need to do well on my feet to continue.''

It was Leggett's abilities on top and bottom that lifted him in his quarterfinal bout. Trailing 4-3, Leggett reversed Gywnn Parks Marcus Brice with 55 seconds left and rode him out. Leggett also rode Brice for much of the second period.

At 189, Allen appears to be setting up a West Regional rematch against defending state champion John Hayhurst of Southern Garrett). Allen (30-2) won by a major decision in his first bout and then won 8-5 in the quarterfinals to set a semifinal bout against Rising Sun's Ryan Gwaltney (26-6).

Several other area wrestlers, including Smithsburg's Mike Dietrich (160) and Harry Baker (171), Williamsport's Brian Forsythe (103) and Ryan Bowers (125), remain alive for non-gold medals when the first round of consolations begin at 10 a.m.

"Winning regions is nice, but it's more important to place in the states,'' Smithsburg coach Joe Dietrich said.
