Williamsport over AlleganyA year ago, the Allegany Campers girls basketball team crashed Williamsport's postseason party sending the Wildcats home jone game short of their dream trip to College Park.

This year, Williamsport is at least at the head of the invitation list as they made reservations to the region final with a heart pounding 45-42 win over the Campers in the Class 1A West semifinal at North Hagerstown on Thursday.

Williamsport's marquee player, Brooke Weimer, had 14 points and hit a running jumper from the top of the key with less than 30 seconds left to give the Wildcats the lead for good. But it was fellow senior Sara Taylor who held the prayers of her teammates in her hands, calmly canning a 1-and-1 with 10 seconds remaining to ensure that Williamsport (17-9) would advance for the second straight season.

"I was so nervous," Taylor said. "I knew we needed those shots to fall for us. Get them, and we play Saturday. Miss them, we may be at home."

"Survival," Williamsport coach Curtis Graff echoed. "Play well enough to play again - that is the name of the game."

Both teams played conservative defense in the first half, and Williamsport led 20-19 at the break. The Campers' 6-foot-1 Teandra Smith, who scored a game-high 16 points, helped the Campers creep away to a 33-27 lead with with just over a minute left in the third.

Williamsport rallied when Graff changes to full-court pressure to open the fourth. Almost immediately, Taylor and Denise Sullivan used breakaways to tie the game.

"Our pressure defense has been awesome this year so we were confident we could get them," Weimer said.
