Knights can't change loss in 2A West semis

By ADELINE STAEBLER / Staff Correspondent

MIDDLETOWN - Middletown coach Kara Nelson wouldn't have changed anything about her game against Urbana in the 2A West Regional semifinals Thursday night.

Except the score.

The Knights lost to Urbana 45-37 to end their season.

"I don't think we played well, I think they caught us on an off night," Nelson said. "I mean there's nothing you can do about it. I wouldn't have done anything differently, I wouldn't have made any of the (substitutions) differently, but you've just got to put the people out there that are going to produce and the people out there were not producing."

The Hawks utilized three Middletown turnovers in the first two minutes of the game to spark a 13-4 run.

"I guess (the turnovers were) just nerves, I can't speak for them," Nelson said. "I tell them all the time, I can only prepare them so much, but when they get out there, they have to be the ones to execute, they're the ones who have to make the baskets, to play the defense. I can't go out and play for them, so it's those kind of mental errors that really hurt us bad."

The Knights closed the gap to within five points at the end of the second quarter but were held to just six points in the third quarter as Urbana grabbed a 34-23 lead.

Middletown ran into foul trouble in the second half, as Kim Waeber and Crystal Shafer both fouled out in the final minutes.

"I think we really got hurt bad by the officials, they really hurt us," Nelson said. "(Waeber) made a couple plays and stuff like that but it always hurts when your star player goes down."

Waeber had 11 points to lead the Knights. Jenna House and Abbie Warner each had six points.

"We just had to take care of our strength and take advantage of our strength, which was getting the ball inside, and we were not doing that," Nelson said.
