Discovery StationDiscovery Station's $500,000 private fund-raising campaign was launched Thursday when a $1,000 check was handed over in front of the vacant warehouse in downtown Hagerstown that is to become the interactive science center.

Discovery Station Treasurer Dave Barnhart said the hope is to raise $1.4 million in private and public funds by July, and to start construction soon after that.

The target opening date for Discovery Station is spring 2002, Barnhart said.

The $1.4 million would cover projected construction costs and operating costs at Discovery Station for the first year, Barnhart said.

The funding plan calls for receiving $375,000 from the state, $25,000 from the Washington County Gaming Commission, $500,000 from the Hagerstown and Washington County governments combined, plus the $500,000 from private sources.

Barnhart said the group has about $6,700 in the bank, not including the $1,000 donation received Thursday.

The $1,000 donation was from the Hagerstown branch of the American Association of University Women, a private nonprofit group that promotes equity for women and girls and positive societal change.

The check was presented by Branch President Erin Brennan to former Washington County Schools Superintendent Claud Kitchens, the honorary chairman of Discovery Station's fund-raising campaign.

"If we can (bring together) the folks who have said they are willing to help us out and support us we should do OK," Barnhart said.

Discovery Station is planned for the former Tusing warehouse, which is between the first blocks of East Franklin and East Washington streets. The building is owned by the city and is being leased to Discovery Station for $1 a year for the next five years.

Barnhart said Discovery Station could have exhibits on geology, dinosaurs, and an observation tower for star gazing.
