BALTIMORE - St. Maria Goretti used a strong second quarter to extend its lead, then held off a rally as the top-seeded Gaels beat Loyola 63-55 in the quarterfinals of the Baltimore Catholic League tournament Wednesday at Goucher College.

Matt Tanner scored six of the Gaels' 12 points in the second to give them a 29-20 lead at the break. Goretti extended the lead to as many as 14 points in the third before Loyola knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to get back within six. The Dons never got any closer in the fourth quarter.

Tanner had 18 points, six rebounds and three assists for Goretti (25-9, No. 6 Herald-Mail poll), which will play the winner of the Mount St. Joseph's-St. Frances game in the semifinals Friday at 8 p.m.

Rodney Gibson had 20 points as the Gaels shot 59 percent from the field. Matt Spierenburg had five rebounds and four assists.

FREDERICK, Md. - Grace Academy committed 40 turnovers and was outscored 11-2 in the second quarter of a loss to New Life Christian.

Stephanie Anthony had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out early in the fourth quarter for Grace (5-16). Lauren Durbin grabbed 15 rebounds and Sherie Basore had 10.
