Loose ball chaseThe South Hagerstown boys' basketball team learned the hard way that lightning does strike twice.

Last season, the Rebels were eliminated by Glenelg in the Class 1A South quarterfinals. Wednesday night - one year and one day removed from that disaster - the Gladiators pulled the trick again.

South watched two late chances at a win fly out the window, as Glenelg pulled out a 54-53 victory in the Class 1A South semifinals and again stunningly eliminate the top-seeded Rebels.

"The big story was our inability to shoot from the outside," South Hagerstown coach Bob Starkey said. "We were 3-for-18 from 3-point land and 6-for-15 from the foul line."

That proved costly in the final 21 seconds.

Mike Lee only went 1-for-2 at that point to tie the game at 53-53, and had his frustration doubled with a touch foul that disqualified him from the game with 11 seconds to go.

Glenelg's Pat Beall went 1-for-2 as well, giving the Rebels three last chances.

Domonique Richmond went the length of the floor, but missed a layup that was rebounded by teammate Tommy Gibson. He was fouled with five seconds to go, but he missed both shots.

A scramble ensued on the second miss, and South (19-5, No. 7 Herald-Mail poll) got one last crack at it with one second to go, but Danny Fowler's long corner jumper was short.

It marked the second straight time a sub-.500 Glenelg team came to Washington County and dumped the Rebels, despite one last superb effort from Lee. The team's 6-foot-5 center finished with 21 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks before his foulout. Richmond finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
