Catoctin's 3s leave South seeing triple

THURMONT, Md. - Call it Catoctin's 3-point bug.

Jessica Valentine caught it first. She passed it on to Cyndi Benjamin. Monica Cherry started feeling its effects, and South Hagerstown simply felt ill.

The Cougars made 11 3-pointers on their Senior Night Tuesday and turned an early 6-0 deficit into a convincing 65-20 victory over the Rebels in the Class 1A South quarterfinals.

"That's the neat thing about this team, when one person gets hot, everyone picks it up," Catoctin coach Tracey Kelley said. "Nights like tonight happen for us more than others, because we are a very contagious team."

Cougars seniors Benjamin and Sarah Yocum were honored in a ceremony before the game. Catoctin then failed to score in the first three minutes as South got field goals from Meghan Nelson and Brandy Price and two foul shots from Cassaundra Cartwright for the early lead.

"With the emotion of the night, we lost a little focus," Kelley said. "It took three or four minutes for us to say, 'Hey, this is a basketball game.'"

Then the 3s started raining down on South (2-19), and the Rebels couldn't find shelter.

Valentine and Benjamin connected in the final four minutes of the first quarter, then both hit twice from long range in the second and Cherry added a 3 of her own as Catoctin (13-10) outscored South 25-1 in the quarter for a 34-9 halftime lead.

Valentine made two more 3s in the third quarter, while Benjamin and Cherry both hit one as the Cougars shot down all of South's hopes. Valentine made 5 of 7 3-point attempts.

"We tried everything, we tried several different defenses and it didn't work," South coach Patty Leazier said. "It's dissapointment, that's all I can say."

Benjamin and Cherry finished with 18 points, while Valentine had 17. Nelson led South with eight points and Cartwright added seven.
