4th quarter runs spells end for Boonsboro

By ADELINE STAEBLER / Staff Correspondent

BOONSBORO - The Boonsboro and Poolesville boys basketball teams are very similar in their looks, size and style of play but they played completely different fourth quarters Monday night as Poolesville posted a 65-58 Class 1A South quarterfinal victory.

The Warriors were up by 11 points going into the fourth quarter, but the Indians went on a 13-4 run to tie the game and then a 3-point shot by Jimmy Ward pulled Poolesville ahead, 59-56. Poolesville outscored Boonsboro 24-6 in the fourth quarter.

"I thought we'd see a carbon copy of us. We're a lot of alike, they run the same man to man, they run a lot of the zone, they like to work the ball inside," Boonsboro coach Chuck Ingram said. "They outrebounded us really bad in the fourth quarter and that hurt us really bad, we couldn't score."

Poolesville outrebounded Boonsboro 12-3 in the fourth quarter.

Poolesville had a nine-point lead in the first quarter, but a 10-4 Boonsboro run brought the Warriors back within three points in the second quarter. A field goal and a foul shot by Boonsboro's Justin Malott brought the Warriors within one point and then a lay-up by Adam Miller gave Boonsboro a 22-21 lead with 3:30 left in the first half. A 6-2 run gave the Warriors a 30-27 lead at halftime.

"Coach sat us down and said we had to perform and we did," Malott said. "We stepped up and answered what he wanted us to do."

Boonsboro came out in the third quarter and outscored Poolesville 22-14 while holding Indian shooter Jimmy Ward scoreless.

"(Poolesville) likes to work it to Jimmy Ward," Ingram said. "We took him out of the game in the third quarter and we got that lead but in the fourth quarter, he jumped outside to where he could get the ball and we couldn't make the adjustment."

Miller had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead the Warriors. Malott had 18 points and five assists. Cody Hanes had five assists.
