Nearly 700 vehicles stopped at Martinsburg checkpoints

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Nearly 700 vehicles were stopped in a series of checkpoints that the Martinsburg Police Department set up earlier this week, Police Chief T.C. Anderson said in a prepared release.

Police issued 38 citations and eight warning tickets during the checkpoint operation, Anderson said. Six arrests were made at the checkpoints, he said.

Participating officers checked 651 vehicles.

The Sunday checkpoints were in the 600 block of Baltimore Street, the 200/300 block of East Burke Street, the 600 block of State Circle and Tavern Road near the entrance to Martin's Landing apartment complex, Anderson said.

"These safety checkpoints were conducted in light of officer assessments and citizen complaints," he said, adding that "The primary purpose of the checkpoints was to ensure drivers were operating motor vehicles with proper operator licenses, vehicle registration, insurance and motor-vehicle inspection."
