HCC women bounced out of Maryland JuCo Tournament

McHENRY, Md. - Prince George's got more and it was enough to beat Hagerstown Community College Saturday in the first round of the Maryland JuCo Conference tournament at Garrett Community College.

The third-seeded Owls got more foul shots, more rebounds and more points off those rebounds to translate to the difference in a 69-64 victory over the Hawks.

HCC (18-8) turned a 27-25 halftime lead into a seven-point advantage early in the second half. Then it all turned against the Hawks.

"I have mixed emotions," HCC coach Marlys Palmer said. "It was almost like we did 95 percent of the things we needed to do to win but the five percent we didn't do ended up hurting us."

Prince George's hit three more foul shots in 10 more tries from the line and outrebounded HCC, 66-44, including 27 off the offensive boards resulting in 20 second-chance points. The Owls took 23 of their 25 foul shots in the second half.

"Rebounding was a key and we didn't outrebound them," Palmer said. "The offensive rebounding hurt us."

Prince George's caught HCC and went up 65-61 with four minutes remaining. Vennece Fowlkes hit a 3-point play to bring the Hawks back to within a point. After the Owls hit a foul shot to get a two-point cushion, HCC called time.

The Hawks came out and ran a play, but missed an open layup, forcing them to foul to stay in the game. Prince George's hit three of four shots down the stretch to ice the game.

Brooke Russ led HCC with 20 points and 12 rebounds while Fowlkes had 12 points and nine rebounds for the sixth-seeded Hawks.

HCC returns to action at the Region XX tournament, scheduled for March 8-11 at Frederick.
