Betty R. Bower

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Betty R. Bower, 79, a resident of Manor Care, and formerly of Jersey Shore, Pa., died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Dec. 30, 1921, in Lock Haven, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Christopher and Amanda Lyons Randecker.

Her husband, Oliver G. Bower, died in 1976.

She was a 1941 graduate of Lock Haven High School, Lock Haven.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Jersey Shore, where she sang in the choir and served on the Altar Guild.

She did volunteer work for Jersey Shore Hospital and Jersey Shore School District.

She is survived by three daughters, Carol Echeverria of Lompoc, Calif., Linda Ferrell of Gillett, Wis., and Rose Stone of Chambersburg; a son, James Gummo of San Jose, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Hafer, and an infant brother.

Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Rearick-Carpenter Funeral Home, 1002 Allegheny St., Jersey Shore. The Rev. Richard Cohoon will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Rosencrans, Pa.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg, and Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Rearick-Carpenter Funeral Home.

Floyd D. Strait

HARRISONVILLE, Pa. - Floyd Decker Strait, 83, of 7414 Pleasant Road, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.

Born Sept. 15, 1917, in Harrisonville, (Fulton County), Pa., he was the son of the late Grover C. and Luella Decker Strait.

His wife, Marden Elizabeth Strait, died Oct. 10, 2000.

He was a construction foreman. He retired as an assistant Fulton County superintendent from PennDot in 1983.

He was a member of Siloam United Methodist Church, Harrisonville.

He was a member of American Legion Post 561 and VFW Post 655, both of McConnellsburg.

He is survived by two daughters, June Winter of Warfordsburg, Pa., and Judy M. Strait of Lanhan, Md.; five sons, Randall Strait of Shreveport, La., Woodrow W. Strait of Harrisonville, Dean W. Strait and Jackie R. Strait, both of McConnellsburg, and Terry C. Strait of Everett, Pa.; a sister, Gayle DeShong of Harrisonville; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Oakman and Grace Swope; two brothers, Woodrow W. Strait and Stanley M. Strait; two grandchildren; a grandson and a great-granddaughter.

Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Siloam United Methodist Church, Harrisonville. The Rev. Charles Gummo will officiate. Burial will be in Siloam United Methodist Cemetery, Harrisonville.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Sipes Funeral Home Inc., Harrisonville, and one hour prior to the services on Tuesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Siloam United Methodist Church Building Fund, 10084 Pleasant Ridge Road, Harrisonville, PA 17228.




Edna E. Martin

WILLIAMSPORT - Edna Earle Martin, 86, of Milestone Garden Apartments, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Williamsport Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 28, 1914, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Mae G. Hess Rowland.

Her husband, J. Preston Martin, died in 1985.

She was employed as a buyer with Eyerly's, Hagerstown.

She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsport.

She was a member of DAR and Ladies of the Elks.

She is survived by a daughter, Donna Pike of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a son, John P. Martin Jr. of Philadelphia; two granddaughters, Sherri Messerli of Martinsburg and Kristen Pike of Frederick, Md.; a grandson, James Mullendore of Hagerstown; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown. The Rev. W. Gregory Martin will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers and that memorial contributions be made to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 35 E. Potomac St., Williamsport, MD 21795.

Donald L. Thompson

HANCOCK - Donald Lee Thompson, 72, of Sensel Road, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at ManorCare, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Aug. 28, 1928, in Hancock, he was the son of the late Emory and Earl Mitchell Thompson.

His wife, Dorothy Blanche Boden Thompson, died April 9, 1988.

He retired from Fairchild and Rohr Industries, Hagerstown, as an inspector.

He was a member of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, Hancock.

He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1483, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Sons of the American Legion, Webster B. Harrison Post 26, Hancock.
