MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Good shooting and better teamwork gave No. 6 St. Maria Goretti a huge halftime lead and an eventual 84-62 victory over Solebury Friday in the opening game of the Mercersburg Invitational Tournament at Nolde Gymnasium.

The Gaels (22-9) went 35-for-53 from the field and finished with 25 assists. Rodney Gibson led Goretti with 30 points and eight rebounds, Matt Tanner scored 17 points and eight rebounds, Matt Spierenburg had eight points and six rebounds and Derrick Davis had 13 points and six assists.

Goretti plays top-seeded Riverdale Baptist in the semifinals today at 4:30. Solebury and Hill School start the day's action at 1.

Phil Scott added 19 points, nine assists and five steals for St. James (12-9), which will play Bishop Walsh in the consolation bracket at 2:45 today. Jared Knotts also had 14 points.

SALISBURY, Pa. - Steve Weller had 18 points, but the Spartans watched an early eight-point lead slip away into a loss in the Class A District 5 quarterfinals.
