Lord and Moats make AAA final



HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Two Hedgesville wrestlers - Daniel Lord and Bryan Moats - won two bouts Friday to keep their state championship hopes alive in the West Virginia tournaments at the Civic Arena.

Lord will meet Robbie Ripley of Nitro in the Class AAA 140-pound final, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. Lord (46-3) won decisions in the quarterfinals and semifinal rounds. Ripley (47-0) also won two decisions Friday.

Moats (46-3) moved within one win of tying ex-teammate Jim Shetler's state career win record of 168. Moats posted two major decisions en route to the final. Moats will meet Jason Mays of Huntington (33-4), won by major decision in the quarterfinals and a decision in his semifinal.

As a team, Hedgesville stands eighth with 76 points. Parkersburg South leads with 160.

Several area wrestlers lost their semifinal bouts Friday. In AAA, Hedgesville's Jason Baker (189) and Jefferson's Rob Osuch (160) and Dustin Householder (215) lost narrow decisions while in Class AA/A, Berkeley Springs' Richard Stotler lost his semifinal bout.

All semifinal losers fall into wrestlebacks and will place no lower than sixths.

Still alive in wrestlebacks, and placing no lower than sixth, are Hedgesville's Kevin Ballam (112), Andrew Everhart (171) and Chuck Files (215), Jefferson's Justin Hawes (130), Devin Abshire (135) and Andre McDonald (152), Martinsburg's Sean Agoney (145) and Travis Durst (160) and Musselman's Jeff Clark (103).

Still alive in AA/A wrestlebacks are Berkeley Springs' Brandon Clark (119), Josh Clark (189) and Levi Hovermale (215).

Stotler, a runner-up at 171 last year, lost a 14-7 decision to Ronnie Hebrock of Oak Glen in his semifinal round.

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> In another bout of note, Wirt County's Erica Dye became the first girl in state history to place sixth or higher at the tournament.

Dye, a junior, defeated Cameron's Noah O'Neil 3-1 in the third round of the AA/A 103 consolations.
