Rural carrier delivers mall mail at an aerobic pace

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - You would think mail carriers would run into people all day on their routes, but that's often not the case since many people are working during the day.

That's why Rose Stouffer looks forward to delivering mail at the Chambersburg Mall, which represents one-fifth of her rural route.

"It's because I do see the people more frequently," said Stouffer, 44, of Chambersburg.

Still, Stouffer doesn't have time for much chit-chat, so often it's delivery and run - or in Stouffer's case, walk really fast.

"You get good exercise, too," said Stouffer, who carries a 30-pound plastic tub of mail into the mall.

She's had the mall route for four years.

While most of the mall mail is distributed in mailboxes in the mail room, often Stouffer makes personal trips to mall stores to deliver large packages, registered mail and certified mail.

Sometimes she can be seen, with her hair tied in a bun, walking at an aerobic pace alongside the morning mall walkers as she makes her deliveries.

"She's very energetic. She's very quick, spunky," said Lori Stinger, owner of Belle Jewelers.

Stinger says, though, that she knows far more about the UPS delivery people because Stouffer visits briefly maybe once a day while UPS may stop by the mall three or four times a day.
