All work is all play to toy store manager

HALFWAY - Vernon Campbell is just a big kid, as anyone who frequents Kay Bee Toys in the Valley Mall knows.

"I'm the only 52-year-old man you'll see with an 18-year-old body," jokes Campbell.

Campbell doesn't look 18, but he often acts younger.

As manager of the toy store he's been employed with for 23 years, Campbell feels obligated to test just about every toy Kay Bee sells.

"It's a lot of work and it's a lot of fun," Campbell said.

While he often confines his tests to the store, Campbell occasionally sneaks out into the mall proper with a scooter when the security guard isn't looking.

At his Oak Ridge home, Campbell is more into collectors' items than scooters.

"I have my share of Hot Wheels cars and Starting Lineup figures," he said.

And Campbell Kids. For his June wedding Campbell has ordered bride and groom Campbell Kids for the wedding party's table.

While Kay Bee is a small store, Campbell said it maintains good business from loyal, repeat customers.

"The one thing that makes me feel good - there's young adults that bring their children in now that were kids when they first came here," he said.
