Moats and Stotler get last chance

Berkeley Springs' Richard Stotler and Hedgesville's Bryan Moats have made very few mistakes this year. In their senior year, neither can afford any more if they are to win a West Virginia state championship.

Competing in Class AA/A, Stotler was second at 171 pounds last year and is the odds-on favorite to win the title this weekend as both the AA/A and AAA tournaments begin today at the Huntington Civic Center. The tournament ends with 28 champions being crowned on Saturday.

If Stotler wins his first two bouts, he'll likely meet Ronnie Hebrock (30-9) of Oak Glen in the semifinals. Hebrock finished third at 171 last year, but Stotler defeated him 10-6 in last year's quarterfinals.

Stotler leads eight Indians into today, including Region II champs Brandon Clark (32-9 at 119), Matt Rosensteel (33-7 at 125) and Josh Clark (38-4 at 189). Brandon Clark, a sophomore and the Region II outstanding wrestler, will meet Ravenswood freshman Brandon Lupardus (17-13) today. Rosensteel, a senior, will meet Greenbrier West sophomore John Smith (24-14). Josh Clark, a sophomore, will meet Clay County senior Derek Woods (18-16).

Berkeley Springs youngsters Jamie Moore (28-13 at 152), Levi Hovermale (13-5 at 215), Donald Stotler (17-23 at 275) and Joey Harrison (10-28 at 130) will also see action today. Moore, a sophomore, meets Calhoun senior Jason Valdes (27-15). Hovermale, a sophomore, meets Liberty Raleigh senior Derrick Stover (28-7). Stotler, a sophomore, meets Tyler Consolidated senior Randy Tuttle (12-2) and Harrison, a freshman, meets Oak Glen Region I champ Gaelen Lowers (32-6).

He has 164 career wins and, if he wins out, will tie former teammate Jim Shetler for the state career win total of 168.

Moats, a three-time Region II champ, will meet University's Scotty Marshall (18-18) today. If Moats wins today, he'll likely face John Marshall junior Derek George (38-1) in Friday's semifinals. George was sixth at 145 last year.
