Accident sends three to hospital

A three-vehicle pile-up on Hopewell Road Tuesday morning tied up traffic and sent three people to Washington County Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Capt. Doug DeHaven of the Halfway Fire and Ambulance companies, said the 7:15 a.m. accident involved a car, a pickup truck and a nine-person van in the 11800 block of Hopewell Road.

Halfway, Williamsport and Community Rescue Service took patients to the hospital.

One person was treated at the scene and didn't want to go to the hospital, DeHaven said. No one in the van was hurt.

Circumstances of the accident and names were unavailable Tuesday night.

Joseph Wayne Mason, 16, of 103 Ray St., was being held Tuesday evening on $80,000 bond at the Washington County Detention Center. He was charged as an adult with armed robbery, first-degree assault, carrying a concealed weapon and reckless endangerment.

The same charges were lodged against a 14-year-old Hagerstown boy and a 15-year-old Falling Waters, W.Va., girl, according to Lt. Gary Spielman.

Originally it was believed the girl who got into the cab in the 100 block of Doub Way on Dec. 15, 2000, wasn't involved in the incident, Spielman said.

As soon as she got in, the two boys approached the driver's side window and displayed handguns, which they fired into the air as they demanded money from the driver, police said.

The arrests over the weekend turned up two handguns, Spielman said.
