Local roundup - Eagles make third time charming vs. Jefferson

* GIRLS BASKETBALL

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Twice before this season, the Hedgesville girls basketball team had a chance to beat Jefferson. The first time, the Cougars shot them down. The second time, they shot themselves in the foot.

Tuesday night, though, the Eagles fired on all cylinders, racing to a 16-point lead after the first quarter and winning 65-55 in the Class AAA Region II Section 1 semifinals.

"We felt good. Both times they were close and winnable games. The first one they shot 62 percent and second one we only shot 27 percent," Hedgesville coach Mary Smith said. "We thought if we could just straighten that out."

Hedgesville (15-7) led 21-6 after one quarter and kept that lead the rest of the way until a late burst by the Cougars (14-7). Jefferson's effort was hurt by the lingering effects of the flu on leading scorer Lindsay Edwards, who was held to just nine points.

"You could tell she was still sick," Smith said. "But she's such a gamer. We played some man and diamond-one to never let her get started. But she's a fighter. You've got to give that to her."

Meanwhile, all the Eagles were fighting. Cathy Ashley had 17 points, Megan Bloomer had 16 and Laura Windle had 13 points - a season-high - in an emergency start for Lynsey Leatherman.

"We only had two post players all night and she just stepped up so huge," Smith said.

Tiffany Linn also added 10 points and five steals for Hedgesville, which spread the wealth everywhere else. No one had more than three assists or six rebounds.

"We're very excited with this one," Smith said. "It was a total team effort."
