Indians' Sanders wins Pa. sectional 140 title

Junior Nick Sanders of Waynesboro won the District 3 Section IV 140-pound title Saturday scoring an 8-6 decision over Mario Baker of Dover at Southwestern High School.

"Nick was sick for the finals, but was definitely the class of the field,'' Waynesboro coach Dan Ireland said.

Two other Waynesboro wrestlers qualified for the District 3 tournament this weekend at Wilson High School. Freshmen Brian Lisko (119) and Eric Kelley (125) placed third.

"Eric Kelley had a super tournament,'' Ireland said. "He came off his back in the consolation finals to overcome an 11-5 deficit to win, 15-11.''

No other area wrestler qualified in Pennsylvania.

Smithsburg's Harry Baker (171), North Hagerstown's Zack Stowell (160) and Williamsport's Sean Vancour (140) all won their first county title.

Baker, who lost a 6-0 decision to North's Brian Hayes in a dual meet, won 5-4 Saturday with a reversal with four seconds left in the bout.

"This is really big for me, this being my first year on varsity,'' Baker said. "I've been behind Mike (Dietrich) and Josh (Trammelle) the last couple of years. To win this, to be 22 (wins) and something, it's great.''

Stowell, who lost in overtime to Dietrich in a dual meet, posted a thrilling 9-8 win that even confused the scoreboard operators, who had it 10-9 the wrong way. Stowell led 5-4 before Dietrich hit a takedown and two nearfall points before Stowell reversed and scored two nearfall points.

"I expected a low-scoring match,'' Stowell said. "That was a lot of scoring in 17 seconds.''

Vancour, a senior, scored a takedown in overtime for a 10-8 win over North's Scott Greenwald, in the tourney's final bout.
