Walkersville pulls out wrestling title

THURMONT, Md. - In 1998, the Walkersville wrestling team shared a county title with Frederick. This time around, the Lions can keep the title all to themselves.

The Lions scored 229.5 points to win the Frederick County Tournament Saturday at Catoctin High School.

Middletown came in a close second with 222 points.

"It was due this year," Walkersville coach Bryan Biehl said. "We knew we definitely had a great shot of winning. Middletown's a great team, they wrestled a very good tournament ... they just came up short."

The Lions won three individual titles. Jason Gladhill (130) won by forfeit, Ed Asbill (119) won a 9-3 decision over Middletown's Peter Beutler and Dan Caywood (112) had a 8-2 decision over Catoctin's Todd Adkins - the freshman's third decision over the senior this season.

"(Adkins) was last year's county champion so I'm just happy I came out on top all three times this year," Caywood (28-4) said. "We may meet again in the regionals. I would hope that I would come out victorious all the time."

"I'm going to tell you this, Adkins and Caywood are different styled wrestlers," Biehl said. "Caywood is a technician and he's powerful. He's real sweet on his feet."

The Knights also had three champions: Brandon Keller (145) won by forfeit, Ryan McQuillen (145) had a 10-6 decision over Walkersville's Charlie Cartwright and Andrew Nicklas (152) took a 10-3 decision over TJ's Mark Esmont.

Thomas Johnson finished fourth. The Patriots' Mark Esmont (189) pinned Middletown's Ben Berger in 3:06 for his team's only county title.

Catoctin finished in fifth place. Derek Fogle (171) had a 9-6 decision over Walkersville's Jason Goff for his first championship.

"I knew (Goff) had been studying up on what I do," Fogle, 26-4, said. "So I just went out there to wrestle smart and wrestle my match and not let him get ahold of me in any way that he controls me."

Frederick finished in sixth place. Cadet heavyweight Akil Patterson pinned Urbana's Pat Harper in 3:51 for his first county title. Patterson was also named the most outstanding wrestler for the tournament and shared the fastest pin title with Brunswick's Ronnie Grill for a 13-second pin.

"(The outstanding wrestler award) was probably the best thing I've ever received," Patterson, 28-0, said. "The coaches in the county feel that I'm one of the top wrestlers in this area, so knowing them and them knowing me, I feel honored."

Brunswick's Dave Carroll (103) advanced to the finals to lead the Railroaders in their first county tournament. He was pinned by Linganore's Joey Lagos in 1:34. The Railroaders won the team sportsmanship award.
