Hoops notes - Draw a pretty picture for city

As it turns out, anything less than a share for the Monocacy Valley Athletic League title might not have been enough for the North Hagerstown boys basketball team.

Playing in one of the most competitive playoff regions - boys or girls - in the state, the Hubs needed every last win to likely set themselves up for a No. 2 seed in Class 3A West when the MPSSAA playoff draw is announced Sunday at Arundel High School.

For the second straight season, only the top four teams in each region will be ranked based on non-holiday tournament results in games played on or before Saturday. The rest of the teams will fill out the bracket through a blind draw. This means the Hubs' game with Francis Scott Key next Tuesday will have no effect on the playoff rankings.

Below is the predicted rankings in each area region based on phone calls to other Maryland papers - it's just a good guess, not an official bracket. A team's qualifying record (through Thursday night) is listed first, its overall record is in parentheses. The state tournament begins Friday, Feb. 23 for the boys and Saturday, Feb. 24 for the girls.

3A West boys

1. Paint Branch 18-0 (20-0): Defending state champ. 2. North Hagerstown 17-2 (19-2): Currently tied for MVAL title. 3. Thomas Johnson 15-2 (15-4): All four losses to private schools. 4. South Carroll 13-4 (15-4): Soaring behind DeMatha transfer Marshall Strickland.

Also: Walter Johnson 13-5 (15-5): Lost two close games to Paint Branch, lost to Sherwood by 2 on Tuesday to lose its seeded spot.

4A West girls

1. Churchill 18-0 (20-0): Ranked 13th in Met poll. 2. Frederick 15-2 (17-3): Won 15 straight, 16th in Met poll.

1A South girls

1. Smithsburg 15-4 (16-5): Locked up top seed. 2. Catoctin 11-5 (11-7): Locks up spot with win vs. Middletown Friday. 3. Oakland Mills 12-6 (13-7): Could move up with Cougars loss on Friday. 4. Glenelg 11-7 (12-7).

Also: Boonsboro, Brunswick, Forestville, Poolesville, South Hagerstown.

1A South boys

1. South Hagerstown 14-3 (15-4). 2. Oakland Mills 9-8 (10-9). 3. Poolesville 8-8 (8-11). 4. A logjam between Glenelg 7-10 (8-11), Smithsburg 7-10 (8-11), Brunswick 7-11 (8-12) and Boonsboro 6-12 (8-12).

Also: Catoctin, Forestville and Victor Cullen.

1A West boys

1. Southern Garrett 14-3 (16-3). 2. Allegany 11-6 (13-6); 3. Westmar 7-9 (8-10), could drop with loss today vs. Frankfort; 4. Hancock 8-11 (8-13): may be No. 3 with Westmar loss. 5. Williamsport 7-11 (7-13): Needs to win at FSK tonight for chance.

Also: Beall, Clear Spring, Northern Garrett.

1A West girls

1. Southern 16-4 (17-5): 12-1 in 2001. 2. Williamsport 11-6 (13-6). 3. Allegany 8-8 (9-9). 4. Northern 8-9 (10-9).

Also: Beall, Clear Spring, Hancock, Westmar.

2A West girls

1. Middletown 16-2 (18-2).

Then it gets confusing - FSK 12-6 (13-7) plays Williamsport today; Urbana 12-6 (14-6); Linganore 12-5 (13-6); Walkersville 11-7 (13-7) plays South Hagerstown today; Fort Hill 11-6 (12-7).

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> In 3A West girls, North Hagerstown and Thomas Johnson will be in the blind draw. The same goes for Frederick's boys in Class 4A West and the boys teams from Walkersville and Middletown in Class 2A West.
